Startup costs can be daunting and it is a big risk to ploug money into a business that you’re not sure that will work. We have taken a look at how you can start a business from home without risking it all!

Your Online Presence

When you start researching starting a business online on forums, Facebook groups and blogs you are likely to see messages about how important your website is. Yes, your online presence is important but it doesn’t need to be a major upfront expense at a time when you don’t have (or want) to be shelling out lots of money.

There are platforms that now allow you to shout about and showcase your business without needing a custom platform being built for you at great expense. You don’t even need a website! Start simple and create the following FREE profiles:

  • Instagram
  • Facebook Page
  • Facebook Group
  • Etsy Store (if you sell your own homemade products)
  • LinkedIn (personal)

There are so many more you can get in due course but don’t bog yourself down with tasks on creating content for too many platforms too early - there are plenty of other tasks you need to do!

If you do want to go down a website route then Wordpress is your best friend. Wordpress is a content management system that’s incredibly powerful and, as importantly, it’s free! You will need to buy a hosting package but you can do that for a few pounds a month. *affiliate?*

You can easily customise all the content without any technical help using themes. A quick google of “free wordpress themes for *whatever your business does*” will throw up some options. Download the theme for free and upload it to Wordpress. Here is a handy YouTube video help you.

Whatever platforms you choose, make sure you put time in to regularly update them with relevant content about your business!

Free Business Banking

Gone are the days where you need to pay for access to a quality bank account for your business. There are a whole host of financial technology companies that offer superb SME banking solutions without the need for long meetings, lots of paperwork or fees.

One of the most popular banking solutions is called Revolut. You can be setup in a matter of minutes with an account that can accept (and pay) in multiple currencies. All powered by an intuitive mobile app, you don’t need to be an accountant to start working with Revolut.

Save time and money and choose Revolut as your startup bank of choice!

Your new business probably needs customers! In the digital age we live in, the power of face-to-face is now even stronger! Whilst there are lots of paid networking events that you can attend, there are lots of free groups too.

If you Google your town and city + “free networking groups” you will quickly find a list of options! These groups are always very welcoming to new members and you will find a room full of business owners. Big or small, you never know what may come from each of these connections. Make an effort to speak to as many people in the room as you can then spend time following up to harness the benefit of the meetings.

If you don’t have time to head out or feel more confident online, head to Facebook and join Facebook Groups that are focused on small businesses connecting with each other.

Keep your spending lean and you give your business the best chance of success!
